Can You Wash, Curl, and Wear Your Hair Up With Extensions? (Yes - If They’re Done Right)

If you’re considering extensions, you’ve probably wondered: Can I still wash my hair? Curl it? Throw it up in a ponytail?

And the answer is.....

A stylist expertly curls a client's hair, enhancing the style with extensions for a voluminous look.

Yes - if they’re done right.

But there’s a second part people don’t talk about enough: just because you can doesn’t mean you should do it the same way you used to.

Extensions change how your hair behaves, how it carries weight, and what habits will keep your natural hair healthy long-term.

Yes, you can wash your hair with extensions (and you should)

Extensions are not a reason to stop washing your hair. In fact, consistent cleansing is part of keeping your scalp healthy and your extension hair performing well.

Best practices for washing

  • Wash your hair normally, but be intentional and gentle at attachment areas

  • Focus shampoo on the scalp and roots

  • Condition mid-lengths to ends (avoid heavy product directly on attachment points unless instructed)

  • Rinse thoroughly (product buildup is a common reason hair feels “gross” fast)

Big rule: don’t treat your hair like it’s fragile glass, but don’t scrub like you’re washing a rug either.

Yes, you can curl your hair with extensions (use heat protection)

You can absolutely curl extensions and most clients do. The key is treating the hair like an investment.

Best practices for curling/styling

  • Always use a thermal protectant

  • Use controlled heat (you don’t need the highest setting)

  • Be mindful around bonds/wefts/attachment points depending on your method

  • Brush gently and correctly before styling (ends first, then work up)

Wearing your hair up: yes… but I don’t love encouraging it early on

This is the part where I’m going to be honest:

I don’t love “promoting ponytails” for brand-new extension clients because people hear “yes” and then they wear their hair up all the time. And when you have extensions, wearing your hair up constantly can turn into a lazy habit because it’s easy.

But your natural hair is the host. It’s carrying the weight.

The weight analogy (why ponytails can create breakage)

Think of it like this:

Your natural hair is like the outside of a straw. The extension hair is like the inside of the straw.

Now imagine you have 150 grams of extension hair living inside your natural hair… and you pull it all back with an elastic.

That tension doesn’t disappear… it concentrates.

And what I see over and over is a break line behind the ears, because that’s where your natural hair is “hosting” the weight and tension of the ponytail.

If you wear your hair up all the time without extensions and you get a break line… why would it be any different when you add more hair and more weight?

It isn’t.

So what’s the safest way to wear your hair up with extensions?

You can still live your life. You can still go to the gym. You can still get your hair out of your face. The goal is just doing it smarter.

My best rules for ponytails with extensions

  • Wait a couple of weeks before doing high ponytails regularly (especially if you’re new to extensions)

  • Choose low and slow over high and tight(A low pony, low side pony, or low loose bun is usually a much better habit.)

  • Avoid tight elastics and aggressive pulling

  • Don’t wear the same ponytail placement every day (switch it up)

  • If you feel tightness, soreness, or pulling, that’s your sign to change the style

Bottom line

  • Wash your hair: yes, and keep it consistent

  • Curl your hair: yes, with a thermal protectant

  • Wear your hair up: yes, but be strategic - especially early on and especially if you’re someone who defaults to ponytails daily

Extensions should make your life easier - not cost you your natural hair.

FAQ: Styling + Extensions

  1. Can you wash your hair normally with extensions?

Yes — wash your scalp and roots as normal, be mindful around attachment points, and rinse thoroughly to avoid buildup.

  2. Can you curl hair extensions?

Yes. Use a thermal protectant and avoid excessive heat, especially near bonds/wefts.

  3. Can you wear your hair up with extensions?

Yes, but avoid wearing high, tight ponytails constantly. A “low and slow” pony or bun is usually safer for your natural hair.

  4. Why do ponytails cause breakage with extensions?

Because your natural hair is carrying extra weight. Tight, repeated tension can create a break line (often behind the ears) over time.
