Hair Extension Consultation: What to Expect + What to Ask Before You Book

4 min read

If you’re thinking about getting hair extensions, a consultation should feel like a relief, not a sales pitch. It’s the step that makes sure you’re not guessing, not getting “talked into” the wrong method, and not investing in something that doesn’t match your hair or lifestyle.

At Studio She, we treat the consultation like a plan-building session. Because the truth is: extensions aren’t one-size-fits-all, and you shouldn’t be pigeonholed into one method just because that’s all a salon offers.

What to expect during a hair extension consultation

A good consultation is guided, efficient, and personalized. It’s not just “pick a length and pay.”

Here’s what we cover:

A stylist expertly adjusts a client's hair during a personalized consultation to explore styles that complement individual preferences and lifestyle.

1) Your hair history

We’ll talk about:

  • previous color (especially bleach)

  • breakage or shedding history

  • past extension experiences (good or bad)

  • what you’ve tried and what you hated

2) Your density + strand thickness + texture

We look at:

  • how much hair you have (density)

  • how fine or coarse your strands are

  • your natural texture and how you style it

This helps us choose a method that looks natural and doesn’t overload your hair.

3) Your color match + color history

We check:

  • current color

  • tone (warm/cool/neutral)

  • dimension and highlights

  • what your hair has been through chemically

A natural blend is never just “close enough.” It’s about matching the movement and tone too.

4) Your lifestyle, budget, and maintenance comfort level

This is where we get real. We’ll ask things like:

  • Do you work out a lot?

  • Do you swim?

  • Are you a daily washer or a once-a-week washer?

  • Do you wear your hair up constantly?

  • How often can you realistically come in for maintenance?

  • What’s your budget range?

Because the “best” method is the one you can actually maintain.

5) Your inspiration photos (and expectation setting)

Bring photos, they help a lot. But we’ll also translate them into something realistic for your hair so you don’t end up disappointed.

6) Method recommendation (based on YOU)

This is the part most people want to skip to, but it should be earned.

Because we offer multiple methods, we can recommend what fits you best instead of forcing you into one option.

7) Timeline + quote

You’ll leave knowing:

  • what method is recommended

  • what your maintenance schedule will look like

  • what your investment range is

  • what the next steps are

The consultation should not take forever

A consult should be guided and respectful of your time.

In most cases, it should be around 15 minutes and structured, ideally with some kind of checklist or process the stylist follows (not just chatting).

What to ask before you book (the questions that protect you)

These questions help you avoid bad installs, bad hair, and bad surprises.

  1. How long have you been doing hair extensions?

  2. Where did you learn? Are you certified/trained?

  3. What methods do you offer, and why would you recommend one over another?(If they only offer one method, that’s not automatically bad… but it can limit what’s truly best for you.)

  4. What type of hair are you using?

  5. Do you understand different hair origins and hair types? Most experienced extension stylists won’t tell you their exact supplier (and that’s normal), but they should be able to speak confidently about:

    -hair origins

    -strand thickness

    -texture matching

-why certain hair types blend better with certain clients

  6. Can I see before-and-after photos of your work?Bonus points if they can show photos of clients with hair similar to yours.

  7. How long will the hair last (and what makes it last or not last)?A good stylist will explain that longevity depends on hair quality, method, and aftercare … not just throw out a number.

  8. What does maintenance look like and how often will I need to come in?If they can’t explain maintenance clearly, that’s a problem.

Red flags during a consultation

Here are a few signs to pay attention to:

  • They talk the entire time and don’t ask you questions

  • They don’t look closely at your hair density, hairline, or texture

  • They rush you into booking without explaining maintenance

  • They can’t explain the hair they use beyond “it’s Remy”

  • They promise unrealistic timelines or results without seeing your hair in detail

  • They make it feel like you’re “difficult” for asking normal questions

A consultation should feel like clarity - not confusion.
