How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? A Method-by-Method Timeline (Realistic + Honest)

If you’re asking “how long do hair extensions last?” you’re really asking two things:
How long will the hair itself stay nice?
How long can I wear this method before it needs maintenance or removal?

And the truth is: it depends on both the method AND the quality of hair you’re wearing.
Two people can have the “same” method and get totally different longevity based on quality/shedding rate, lifestyle, aftercare, and the installer’s technique.
Below is a realistic timeline (the kind people don’t always say out loud).
Quick overview: “Hair lifespan” vs “wear time”
Before we go method-by-method, here’s the simplest way to understand it:
Reusable methods (tape-ins, beaded rows/hand-tied, hybrid wefts):The hair can last a year or more with quality hair and proper care, but you’ll need regular move-ups/maintenance.
Bonded/custom methods (K-tips/keratin bonding):You typically wear them until removal, and then that hair is not reused the same way. (Some places re-dip; at Studio She we don’t.)
Keratin Bonding / K-Tips (Fusion): 4-5 months (sometimes 3-4 months in delicate areas)
Realistic wear time: 4-5 monthsYou’ll hear some brands claim 5-6 months, but here’s why that’s not usually realistic:
Every day, you shed up to 100 strands of hair. That shed hair isn’t “stuck inside” the bond forever in a way that keeps perfect balance. Over time, the weight and balance changes, and that’s when bonds can start to feel different, shift, or become less ideal to keep wearing.
Fine hair + smaller bonds = shorter wear time (and that’s normal)
If you have fine hair and your bonds are cut down smaller (especially around the hairline and crown), those pieces often don’t make it the full 4-5 months because they’re intentionally lighter and more delicate.
Typical timeline there: 3-4 months
Bottom line: K-tips are amazing when done correctly, but the “longest possible wear time” isn’t always the healthiest choice.
Tape Extensions: hair can last 1 year+ (if it’s quality hair)
Tape is a reusable method, meaning you’re typically moving the hair up and re-installing it.
How long does tape hair last?
If you buy good hair, it should last over a year with proper care.
You might see people online saying extension hair “only lasts 6 months.” Honestly? A lot of the time that’s not the method — it’s the hair quality. If a stylist is buying cheap hair, you’re going to get that “6-month max” experience, and then clients think that’s normal.
Tape maintenance
Tape requires regular maintenance/move-ups. (Your exact schedule depends on your growth rate and your hair type.)
Hand-Tied / Beaded Rows (including hybrid wefts): hair can last 1–2 years
Hand-tied is part of the beaded row family (and can be done with hand-tied wefts, machine wefts, or hybrid wefts).
How long does the hair last?
With quality hair and proper care:
Common expectation: 1 year or more
At Studio She, the hair we use can last up to ~2 years
Why the hair seems to get “shorter” over time
Even when the hair quality is great, the wefts can appear to get shorter over time because we’re not installing them on the exact same row forever. We intentionally adjust placement slightly higher or lower over time to avoid repeatedly stressing the same area (and to reduce the risk of traction alopecia).
So the hair can last a long time, but it evolves as we maintain it responsibly.
Beaded row maintenance
Beaded rows require regular move-ups/maintenance.
ILight / UV methods: typically 6-8 weeks
This one is more variable person-to-person.
Typical wear time: 6-8 weeksAnd yes, some clients somehow go longer. It happens. It’s not always predictable, and it can depend on lifestyle, hair type, and how the bonds are cared for.
Which methods require maintenance vs “wear until removal”?
Here’s the simple breakdown:
Methods that require maintenance/move-ups
Beaded rows (hand-tied, hybrid wefts, invisible rows, etc.)
Tape extensions
Individual maintenance-based methods (examples: cold fusion, I-linking, I-tips, invisible rows)
Methods that are typically worn until removal (not “move-up” maintenance)
Keratin bonding / K-tips (fusion)These are customized and bonded, so you’re usually wearing them until it’s time to remove and refresh.
The biggest factor people ignore: hair quality
If you want your hair to last:
Invest in quality hair
Protect it like the investment it is (sleep, brushing, heat, swimming, color habits)
Keep up with maintenance on reusable methods
Because method matters, but hair quality + care is what determines whether your extensions still look amazing at month 8, 12, or 18.
